About The Artist: Watanabe Nobukazu

Watanabe Nobukazu was a woodblock artist who was active from 1874-1944. He was active towards the very end of the ukiyo-e period, when the popular days of this style were over. Printmakers like Nobukazu struggled to keep afloat in the art world by depicting the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars. Ukiyo-e is the best-known type of Japanese woodblock art print. An earlier term for a woodcut, usually on larger, rougher pieces of wood.
