About the artist:

1913 Born in Gloversville, N.Y. on June 28, son of Syrian immigrants. 1934 Graduated with BFA from Syracuse University. 1935-6 Painted murals for Gloversville High and Junior High schools, WPA project. 1937-8 Studied in Paris, France at the L'Academie de la Grande Chaumiere and L'Ecole Superieur des Beaux Art. 1938-9 Fought with Abraham Lincoln Brigade for Republican Spain, wounded in Gandesa. 1940-1 Taught and was on WPA mural project in New York City. 1941 Presented first one-man show in Wakefield Gallery, New York City. 1942-6 Served in the US Air Force in the South West Pacific receiving Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medals with clusters. 1946 Re-established himself in New York City painting and teaching. 1947 Married Edna Greenfield. Two daughters Anita, 1948 and Adele, 1950. 1949-1987 Had regular one man shows at the ACA. Gallery, NYC. SELECTED ONE MAN SHOWS: Santa Barbara Museum, CA, 1943; , 1948; Martick Gallery, 1955;; Kansas City Art Institute, 1956; Syracuse Museum,1956; Berkshire Museum, 1957,1960; Fordham College, 1967; Pace College, 1968; New School for Social Research, 1970, 1977, 1983; Rudgers University, 1987; Brandeis University, 1987; Northern Westchester Center for the Arts, 1988; Notre Dame University, 1991; Teacher's College, Columbia University, 1994. 1955 Received Doctorate in Fine Arts and Fine Arts Education from Teacher's College, Columbia University. 1952-1995 Taught painting at the New School for Social Research in New York City. 1960 Moved to Katonah, New York and established large studio in converted barn. 1967 and 1971 Completed two murals for Syracuse University. 1968 Dover published his book entitled Creative Painting and Drawing. 1978 Prentice-Hall published his book entitled Painting and Drawing. 1980-1996 Taught painting at the Northern Westchester Center for the Arts. MEMBERSHIPS: National Academy of Design, Artist Equity Association, Audubon Artists and National Society of Mural Painters. SELECTED HONORS: Purchase prize, University of Illinois, 1950; Ohio Wesleyan, 1953; Grumbacher Award, Audubon Artists, 1954; Emily Lowe Award, 1955; Mickiewicz Competition First Prize, 1956; Staten Island Museum Purchase Prize, 1957; Childe Hassam purchase prize National Institute, Arts and Letter, 1967,1976; Benjamin Altman Figure prize, National Academy, 1975,1980; Eggers Senior Alumnus award Syracuse University,1989; Alumnus award Teachers College, Columbia University, 1991; 1st Prize Putnam Art Council, 1994. 1993 Death of wife, Edna. 1997 Moved to Fairfax, California. 1998 Retrospective exhibit of his oil paintings, 7 Decades of Painting, at the City Arts Gallery of City College of San Francisco and at the Fairfax Library. 2001 Exhibited his oil paintings, Rembrance 2001, at the Mott Gallery and 2 other locationss in Fairfax. 2003 Celebrated his 90th birthday with an exhibit at the College of Marin Gallery, Father/ Daughter Retrospective. 2004 Died on September 10 at the age of 91.
