Antoine Poncet was a French sculptor, born May 5, 1928, in Paris. Grandson of Maurice Denis and son of Marcel Poncet, Swiss painter and glassmaker Antoine Poncet discovered sculpture at the age of 14, first with Reymond in Lausanne, then Germaine Richier in Zurich (1942). He was a student at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lausanne from 1942 to 1945. A bursar of the French state, he returned to Paris where he settled permanently in 1948. He became a pupil of Zadkine and Gimond , meets Arp (which whom he would collaborate from 1953 to 1955), Brancusi, Laurens, and befriends Alicia Penalba, Stephen Martin, Francois Stahly, and Walber. In 1956, Antoine Poncet participated in the Venice Biennale and received the following year the André Susse Prize (Academy of Fine Arts). His first solo exhibition took place in 1956 at the Iris Clert Gallery in Paris. Antoine Poncet participates in many events. In 1960, he was a member of the Jury of the Bourdelle Prize, from 1961 to 1965, he participated in the Biennales of Antwerp - Middelheim (Belgium), and in 1963 at the Sculpture Symposium of Manazvru (Japan). He is in 1969 Chairman of the May Salon Committee. In 1983 he received the Henry Moore Prize from the Hakone Museum (Japan) and in 1996 the Prix de l'Hermitage (Lausanne).
