Arthur R. Herrick

American (1897–1970)

About the artist:

New England impressionists Aldro T. Hibbard and Anthony Thieme were his teachers and his friends. Like his contemporaries, Gloucester, Rockport, and scenic points along the North Shore of Massachusetts as well as New Hampshire's snow-covered mountains figured large in his oeuvre. An estimated 370 works by Arthur R. Herrick Sr. (1897-1970) are owned across the U.S. His granddaughter says she has another 300 of his paintings. Lesser known than Hibbard or Thieme are today, Herrick enjoyed a bit more notoriety during his lifetime, but never achieved the critical acclaim of his teachers. He studied at The New School of Design in Boston (now the Vesper George School) and worked as a freelance illustrator and package designer (Ritz Crackers, King Arthur Flour). Eventually he exhibited his paintings at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford and Vose Galleries in Boston.
