French (1840–1917)
This sculpture of French writer Honoré de Balzac was originally modeled in clay in 1893 and then cast in bronze between 1926 and 1933 by Auguste Rodin and his foundry.
"Nude Study of Balzac with Folded Arms (“C”)" was created after the death of Balzac, when the City Fathers of Paris commissioned Rodin to create a sculpture honoring his memory. This first model shows the writer depicted in a manner similar to how the Roman/Greek god Bacchus/Dionysus was, with a proud and nude stature, round belly protruding out. The City Fathers rejected the piece and Rodin created a new version that showed Balzac wrapped in a robe. This piece is referenced in Grappe 189 and includes a signature stamped in the base.
