BONO

American (1929–2024)

About the artist:

Bono (Wilfredo Calvo-Bono) searches for new visual representational forms to create a proper environment for meditation and reflective thinking. The "Possibilities Series" constitutes all the work related to this purpose. Additionally he has created the "Bad, Sad and Ugly Series" with the purpose to face social, economical, political problems that require urgent attention. Born in New York City in 1929 of Cuban parents Bono was raised in Cuba. There he received his Architectural degree at Havana University in 1954. Studying under a European influenced curriculum, he obtained the basis for painting. Attended workshops with Josef Albers, which familiarized him with the German Bauhaus concepts. Visited Yucatan to study the ruins of the Mayans and Aztecs. In a second visit to Mexico he attended the opening of the new Federal University in Mexico City where he observed the artistic nationalism of the Mexican artists. After graduation he practiced his career several years in Cuba untill leaving to Spain in 1968. In Madrid he painted intensively. His work was representational, realistic. This was the base for the way to execute the pieces in the "Bad, Sad and Ugly Series". The artistic environment was quite beneficial for his development. The technical and moral support from the Spanish painters and the human observations from the Gypsies coworkers was invaluable. In 1971 he came with his family to the USA. This was the time of the initial geometrization of his work. The "Possibilities Series" was born with striking colors and nonconventional materials. Recently his work is based in the research of visual effects obtained with painted plexiglass. Devoting his life to both art and architecture Bono has lived in Columbus, Ohio, since 1971. He has been the recipient of two Grants from the highly esteemed Pollock-Krasner Foundation. His work has been displayed and collected throughout the United States, Europe, and South America.
