About the artist:

Charles Émile Carlègle was born in Aigle in the Swiss canton of Vaud. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Geneva, and then in Paris, where he lived from 1900 until his death in 1940. Carlègle began his career contributing drawings to satirical magazines, including L'Assiette au Beurre, Fantasio, and Le Rire. But he is best-known for the many fine editions he illustrated of authors such as Sappho, Diderot, Ronsart, Anatole France, Pierre Louÿs, and Henri de Regnier.
