About the artist:

Born in Aurora, Illinois (USA) in 1953. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1974 from Dominican College, Racine, Wisconsin, and then a Masters of Arts & Masters of Fine Arts from Northern Illinois University, Dekalb, Illinois in 1977. Thereupon, she moved to New York and spent the following 15 years exhibiting & marketing art in various NYC galleries, LeFigaro Café, Greenwich Village, & New York Art Expos. During this period she worked as an Education Co-ordinator at the Jersey City Museum, NJ., incorporated Contemporary Art Masters, a serigraphic printing studio in Jersey City, NJ., worked as an art consultant for Martin Lawrence Limited Editions at Danbury, CT., and taught as a professor of Art History at Mercy College, White Plaines, NY. She moved to Paris, France in 1993, where she married, established a family, and continues her art career. Artistic Statement by the Artist My art, as art and life in general, is in constant flux of being redefined: "Total Art" was the avant-garde term of the late '70's when I was a graduate student in America. The major aspects concerned were: Time, Space, & Idea. It was an offspring of Conceptual Art, which stressed the essence of the work, (that which motivated the mental process preceding the tangible or non-tangible art product). It placed greater emphasis on conceptual content than on palpable subject matter; the art object was discarded in favor of the art idea. I was an advocate of "Gesamtkuntswerk", meaning the sophisticated weave of all the creative arts. I commenced Performance Art in graduate school. My first graduate art degree was given in Printmaking and my second in Painting, although I never painted one painting. Instead, I submitted Performance Pieces. Audience participation was tantamount. The participants became an intrinsic part of the art; their response to my multiple sequenced activities (Time), environment (Space), & concept (Idea) was art. After graduate school I incorporated a non-profit organization called Limbo Productions, dedicated to Performance Art. It was composed of 7 persons from various disciplines: visual arts, dance, music, theater, & carpentry. I termed our endeavors Team Art. I continued performance art when I moved to Brooklyn, NY. Although well received, performance art could never pay the bills. In New York City as in Paris I made object art, specifically the cityscapes requested from the galleries. This artistically fulfilled my technical printmaking pleasure as well as being economically practical. Even in graduate school, I had to defend my love of esorteric Performance Art with my dual passion for producing object oriencted art. Pure and simple, I love both art forms and refuse to limit my creativity to just one; contrary to professional advice. The public may have a preference for one or the other but hopefully, I will be able to broaden their appreciation to include the other. I personally still appreciate the shoe designs of Warhol as much as his esorteric-commercial Campbell Soup Cans. He effectively played with both sides of the artistic coin as well as succeeding at combining the two into a brand specifically his own and indigenous to his time. I too have the same temperament! Personal life choices such as marriage and family have redirected some of my energy. My artistic endeavors have manifested at a slower pace but with the same passion of my youth. Presently I am exploring domestic objects & ideas customary to the typical housewife as medium for my "paintings". I find inspiration from everyday materials much the same as in primitive societies. I utilize dolls & yoyos, kitchen utensils & food labels, sewing materials & patch-work. I am using functional mundane household items & creating non-functional esoteric art. The blurring of art & life/life & art has always been a preoccupation of mine likewise the defining of what designates a painting, sculpture, etc… My art has definite feminist undertones and in the future, this period should be refered to as my Domestic Female Epoch.
