About the artist:

Rubadoux has participated in over 70 exhibitions. Solo exhibitions have included the Ringling Museum of Art, the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art, the Lowe Museum of Art, and the Cornell Fine Arts Museum. His artworks are included in many public and private collections including the Guggenheim Museum, New York; the High Museum of Art, Atlanta; the Ringling Museum of Art, Sarasota; the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale; the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, FL; and the State of FL. Rubadoux primarily works on paper and canvas. His paintings are intensely personal glimpses into particular emotions, and he frequently speaks of his work as a journal. Greatly affected by his environment and a love of nature, Rubadoux's painting style is colorful and fluid. Rubadoux's paintings are not literal documentations of nature, he seems interested in the essence rather than the facts of nature. There is an emphasis on line, color, and spatial relationships. While the subject matter varies, it embodies the artist's personal conception of the world and his feelings and responses to that world. He orchestrates this arrangement like a conductor who intuitively knows the score." - Mark Ormond, Curator, Ringling College of Art & Design (1986) BIOGRAPHY Craig was born in l937 into a middle class family in New York State. As a young boy his creativity was encouraged by both is grandmother and his mother. His family's relocation to Florida introduced Craig to the sub tropical flora and fauna which in later years often made a presence in his paintings. At the age of eleven, he was the youngest member of the Sarasota Art Association (Visual Arts Centre) and at the age of twelve, he had his first solo art exhibition. From that time on he knew that he wanted to paint. Much to Craig's delight at the age of seventeen he won a scholastic art award to the Ringling School of Art where with great relish he drew naked ladies. After the naked ladies a wonderful opportunity presented itself to Craig to apprentice with Ben Stahl in Spain. After three wonderful years in Europe, visiting Museums, teaching and painting, Craig returned to Florida to begin his career in earnest. On reflecting on Craig's life some of the personal highlights have been and continue to be his two now adult children, his friends, international travel, acquisition of his work by major museums and the generous appreciation of his work by his collectors. More recently Craig has worked on antique glass and has created two major installations. Craig feels privileged to have been endowed with this innate gift which gives him immeasurable joy and courage to continue on the adventure of life. ARTIST STATEMENT "My work is figurative, abstract and magically mystical. It is a reflection of man's search for meaning, his relationship with himself, his environment and the important people in his life. "While lines, brush strokes and sensuous colour define the object, swirling lines expand beyond the figure, animal or landscape, suggesting movement, flux and change. I strive to keep the work fresh and alive, sometimes to a childlike feeling of abandon. Although I have worked steadily over many decades I continue to experience joy and great satisfaction when a difficult passage in a painting has been resolved successfully. "Many of my paintings are done on gessoed paper. I am attracted to its surface qualities as well as its portability and immediacy. I feel that I can capture the intimate nature of drawing in my oils on paper. "Although my work is very personal, viewers can recognize and identify with the range of feelings that are projected, such as longing, sensitivity, intensity and contemplation. Figures and forms are often distorted or disintegrated. In this process, the painting can communicate more of the essence and internal energy of being. "More recently, I have been drawn to express myself more abstractly. I engage in this process with as much enthusiasm as possible allowing the moment to dictate the outcome. "I draw inspiration from the wonderous creatures in nature such as the warthog, lemurs, lynxes, otters and birds as well as bleached trees on a southern beach, the dark Florida rivers and the craggy Nova Scotia coast."
