Infamous art forger David Stein was implicated multiple times for selling faked works of art by renowned artists.

In his later years, in order to avoid further lawsuits, he began titling his pieces "In the Manner of..." so that it was clear he was merely emulating the style of the artist, not forging it. He did, however, continue to make forgeries in secret for the rest of his life. This piece is done in the style of Egon Schiele and features the artist’s signature jagged color blending and stretched features.

David Stein (born Henri Haddad) was an artist who, until 1966, had been frequently sentenced for theft by the French courts before becoming an art forger and art dealer with 15 aliases. Stein often copied paintings in the style of the masters. For example, he studied Marc Chagall, Matisse, Braque, Paul Klee, Miró, Jean Cocteau and Rouault, in order to copy their color scheme and inspirations.
