His early education consisted of exposure to the cultural life then available in the area, which for him was a focus on music because his parents were classically trained singers and active in choirs in their respective churches. The family later moved to California. The dramatic views of the western landscape made a significant impression on Oliver as a young boy, and he began to paint landscape images at the age of Twelve. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the California Institute of the Arts and later a Masters of Arts degree from the University of Redlands, California. Doug Oliver's subject matter is known for the Southwestern landscape and skyscapes in the acrylic medium. His work has been published in Southwest Art and Art of the West magazine publications.
