Emanoel Araújo, is an artist, collector and curator, and was born in Salvador da Bahia, in 1940. Throughout his artistic career he has received many awards among them the Gold Medal of the III Graphic Biennial of Florence, Italy (1972), and he was elected Best Engraver of the Year, 1974 and Best Sculptor of the Year, 1983, both awards made by the Association of Art Critics of São Paulo. As museum director he worked in the Bahia Art Museum (1981-1983) and the Pinacoteca do Estado, São Paulo (1992-2002). Since 2004, he is Head Curator and Director of the Museu AfroBrasil. Among his major exhibition contributions are: The Magic World of Baroque, Negro in Body in Soul, Road Map, Popular Art, and Black Memories, Memories of Negroes. Sculptor, designer, illustrator, costume designer, writer, designer, painter, curator and museologist. Learn woodworking with master Eufrásio Vargas and works with and linotype typesetting in the official press, in Santo Amaro City, Bahia. Held his first solo exhibition in 1959. In the 1960s, he moved to Salvador and entered the School of Fine Arts at the Federal University of Bahia - UFBA, where he studied printmaking with Henrique Oswald (1918 - 1965). In 1972, it awarded a gold medal at the 3rd Biennial of Graphic Florence, Italy. Receives the next year, the award for best writer, and in 1983, the best sculptor of the Paulista Association of Art Critics - APCA. Between 1981 and 1983 installs and runs the Art Museum of Bahia in Salvador, and exposes individually at the Art Museum of São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand - Masp. In 1988, he was invited to teach graphic arts and sculpture at the Arts College, The City University of New York. From 1992 to 2002, holds the position of director of the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo - PESP and is responsible for the revitalization of the institution. It is between 1995 and 1996, the Commission invited member of the Federal Council of Museums and Cultural Policy, instituted by the Ministry of Culture. In 2004, curator and director of the Afro-Brazil Museum, opened this year in São Paulo, with works from his collection. Critical Commentary Emanoel Araújo, between 1961 and 1965, he attended the School of Fine Arts of Bahia, where he studied printmaking with Henrique Oswald (1918 - 1965). These pieces already show his interest in three-dimensional. Interested in restructuring the world of African art, the artist emphasizes in his engravings, reliefs and sculptures geometric shapes combined with strong colors and contrasts. Emanoel Araújo stands out for his performance toward the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo - PESP and was also curator of important exhibitions related to the image and culture of black and Indian in Brazil.
