Emil Schill (born February 3, 1870 in Basel; 11 January 1958 core) was a Swiss painter. Emil Schill was born the fifth of six children in Basel. His father, a wealthy merchant who supported him in his desire to become a painter. Schill heard in Basel lectures on art history at Jacob Burckhardt. From 1889 until 1893 he studied at the Art School in Karlsruhe at Ernst Schurth, Theodor Poeckh and especially Caspar Ritter, 1893-94. At the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Paul Höcker 1895-96 he attended the Académie Julian in Paris, at the Jules Lefebvre and Tony Robert-Fleury were his teachers. After these years of study Schill let down again in his hometown of Basel. There he became a member of the Basel artist company, which he was president from 1899 to 1901. In 1911 Schill moved to core in Obwalden, where he lived and worked until his death. Here he received his friends and supporters in his own studio and house. In the 1950s, Schill were honorary national rights issued, and in 1955 he became an honorary citizen of the core. Schill was considered sociable. He was, among other friends with Cuno Amiet and Giovanni Giacometti and with Arnold Böcklin, Fritz and Franz Baur Schider. Schill was around 1905/10 as one of the most important artists of Switzerland. He was represented in all relevant Swiss exhibitions. He is considered one of the most outstanding Spätimpressionist and landscape painter at the transition to modernity. After moving to Obwalden his subjects changed from late Impressionist landscapes Jura to subalpine, often harsh landscape Obwalden. His late work after 1940 is characterized by impressive terrain and cloud pictures. Preceded them was a long series of photographic studies painted on wood.
