A lone black farmhouse sits in a landscape that is so blindingly bright as to almost be white.

Although small dots of greenery can be seen peeking through the glare, the goal of the artist Emile Rampelberg was clearly to depict the glaring contrast between dark and light at high noon. The result in this painting is that the farmhouse, its tree, and their shadows are the only subjects in full focus, the bright colors from the interior and the figures all huddled in the shade of an awning the only contrast against the black siding. This beautiful watercolor is signed in the lower right in pencil and framed nicely in gold. Provenance: Galerie Felix Vercel, New York.

Emile Rampelberg was a French textile designer and painter . Emile Rampelberg was born in Flanders and lived in Paris from 1918. From 1939 he worked as a textile designer. In 1942 he opened his own studio, which employed around 30 people and which he ran together with his brother Charles.
