Heriberto Cogollo

Colombian (1945)

About the artist:

Established Colombian artist, Heriberto Cogollo is one of the best known Latin American figurative painters and printmakers. Regarded as one of the most important contemporary Latin American artists, Heriberto Cogollo creates powerful, meticulously rendered compositions – primarily nudes and horses – set in mysterious, surrealistic settings. His oils and prints have been exhibited and critically acclaimed throughout the Americas and Europe. In the precisely painted figuarative compositions of Heriberto Cogollo his subjects, predominatly male and female nudes and horses, are placed in a vareity of different locations to imbue them with a specific and poectic actuality outside the of pure painterly invesitgation. As he explores the diveresity of anatomical structures and surface textures found in the human and animal body, he contrast his figures against the landscape interiors, and other familiar places. This situates them in time and place, where they pose as passive models for the artist's brush, gazing outward for the viewer approval. Artist, model viewer, and background are forced into a strange relationship taht is confusing and visually disorienting. Two important encounters mark this event, the first being the start of a long friendly collaboration with two more poets Ted Joans and Joyce Mansour. The second being the meeting with the French publisher/collector Daniel Filipacchi. 1975 – In parallel to his painter activities, he begins his long and successful illustrator career, under his father’s name – CUADRADO – collaborating mainly with Lui and Playboy, both monthly magazines published by Filipacchi. 1977 – Release of a boxed set limited edition entitled Cogollo Caniculaire, consisting of a series of lithographs along with poems by Ted Joans and Joyce Mansour. 1977 1988 – During these years, Cogollo’s illustrations spread from magazines like Pilote (several signed front covers) to weekly’s – Expansion, Le Nouvel Observateur – and on to working for well known editors such as Gallimard, Albin Michel. Comes back to Europe. He is now living and painting in the town of Montpellier( South of France). Artist's Statement: For me painting is vital, it is the way in which I express myself. With the language of imagery, I investigate the obscure worlds that lay deep within. My goal is to extract, give shape and ultimately present my personal narrative of life. From early childhood, the sounds, sensations and visions that I experienced became forever inscribed in my subconscious. I draw upon this raw material to organize, create and express. And if an image precedes an action or thought, the most natural thing for me is to translate that initial impulse, the image, onto canvas. The alchemy of the Old Masters guides me in my attempts to translate these images in my mind…the mysterious light in the work of Caravaggio, the magic in a Rembrandt, the pictorial synthesis of Velasquez. Each time I begin to form an idea, I try to do so with the maximum rigor that the subject requires, to be clear and explicit: to make real what I imagine, to create a timeless image. All the images inside of me are silent. They quietly make their way from my mind onto paper and finally take shape on canvas. I could say that silence is what I paint. For me, the real subject is not the one that is seen, but rather the feeling that overtakes me during its elaboration. It is my intention to convey this moment of bliss to the viewer, to reveal my own silent astonishment.
