Hope Sandrow

American (1951)

About the artist:

Hope Sandrow is a visual artist who lives and works in Manhattan and Southampton, NY. While most of her work is photo based, she also incorporates found objects, video, internet and audio-based works within mixed media installations. Sandrow’s intent is creating works representing the natural history of everyday life; establishing discourse on notions of nature, culture, art, identity, gender, science, history and myth. At critical times her role is as participant like that of the viewer, more often it’s as Observer in works that encourage interaction between artists, art and the public. In 1988, her work expanded beyond the confines of gallery walls into the community through her creation of the conceptual activist project Artist & Homeless Collaborative. Hope has been the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, Art Matters Fellowship, and the Skowhegan Governors Award. Her artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally, in solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum at Altria, Grey Art Gallery, and SECCA, and in group exhibitions at the Landes Museum, Whitney Museum of Art, Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Aldrich Museum, Indianapolis Museum, Baltimore Museum of Art, National Museum of American Art, and Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.
