about Peonies

Looking out over the garden and into the landscape behind, Jane Freilicher's print of several peonies arranged on a windowsill is a classic example of the artist's work.

With a floral arrangement set in the foreground partially obscuring the view into the exterior space, this print retains a similar composition to many of her other works.

About The Artist: Jane Freilicher

Jane Freilicher (November 29, 1924 – December 9, 2014) was an American representational painter of urban and country scenes from her homes in lower Manhattan and Water Mill, Long Island. She was a member of the informal New York School beginning in the 1950s, and a muse to several of its poets and writers. About The Medium: Aquatint

An etching process in which tone is created by treating a plate with fine particles of acid resistant material (like powder resin) and then placing the plate in an acid bath. The acid bites into the plate between the grains of resin and when printed, the mass of tiny spots produces a textured area with tonal effects similar to watercolor wash.
