about Acoma Skies

John Axton's depiction of the roof of a pueblo in the Sky City region of Acoma Pueblos, also known as Old Acoma, appears dreamlike and haunting.

Contrasting heavily with the soft yellowish-gold of the pueblo building's facade, the deep magenta and purple sky nearly obscures the ghostlike figure covered in a gauzy robe rendered in the same color scheme as the composition itself.

John Axton’s simple, dramatic, often haunting imagery has created a large following. His minimal horizons, even a single marble - draw the viewer into the canvas to peacefully contemplate the fusion of reality and imagination. The artist creates a lithograph by drawing an image directly onto the printing element using materials like lithograph crayons or special grease pencils. After this, the drawing is transferred from the plate to the paper in multiples. A lithograph will not have dots when examined with a magnifying glass.
