About the artist:

Leopoldo Maler (born 1937) is an Argentine visual artist. He studied law and in 1961, went to London where he lived 17 years. He worked for the BBC and obtained in 1964, with the London Film Festival, a prize for a short film. He exhibited at the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, represented Argentina at the XlV International Biennial of Arts in Sao Paulo where he won the Grand Prix. In 1977, Maler received a grant from the Guggenheim Foundation and remained in New York until 1983, when he became the first rector of the Parsons Arts School (Latin America division, Santo Domingo). There he installed a residence for artists, through which many Argentine plastics passed, such as Peres Celis and Pablo Ovelar, and other Latin American countries. He has ventured into painting, design, video, cinema and other expressions. Since the end of the 1960s, Leopoldo Maler's work has slipped between theater, dance and the visual arts. The show exhibits documentation of Crane Ballet (1971), in which three men "dance" on the heights driven by cranes that determine their aerial movements according to a strict choreography designed by the author, Maler had already induced the collaboration between Dancers and machineries in an earlier work, X-lT (l969). On this occasion, Maler received the artistic order of merit given by the mayor of Madrid. In 1982 he received the Konex Prize - Diploma to Merit. Currently, he prepares a series of new projects including a show in Trieste, which consists of gathering in the various Latin American oceans to create a piece that is both artistic and ecological. He lives in Casa de Campo, Dominican Republic. He is the director of the division of Parsons School of Design in that country.
