French (1909–1988)
A Pointillist oil painting on board by French artist Lucien Neuquelman.
This simple still life is composed using a technique developed by Georges Seurat in the late 1800s. Seurat was curious about the science of the eye and at what stage it would cease to see individual details in lieu of the larger picture. By placing small dots of differing colors close together, an effect of blended colors is achieved when the piece is viewed from a distance. The result is very vibrant colors that don’t get muddied in the mixing process.
