Russian (1887–1985)
The Modern Russian artist Marc Chagall often took a very literal approach to naming his art.
The title of this unique tempera and gouache painting on masonite translates very simply to "Peasant Woman with Green Face". Chagall regularly depicted people with unusual skin and hair colors, lending a magical quality to his pieces, a quality that is further emphasized by visual movement produced from swirling brushstrokes. This beautiful original painting is signed by the artist in the lower right and on the verso and is framed in an ornate gold leaf frame. The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by the Comité Marc Chagall. Provenance: Pierre Matisse Gallery, New York (acquired directly from the artist). Galerie Felix Vercel, New York (acquired from the above in 1984). Acquired from the above by the previous owner in March 1988.
