About the artist:

Born in 1927 in Brooklyn, Martin Canin is an American artist known for his intense color field and abstract geometric artworks. He received a BFA in Painting from Syracuse University in 1951. While producing and exhibiting work internationally, Canin also taught in the illustration department at Parsons School of Design in New York for 25 years. Although he lived abroad for several years, first in Japan and later in Spain and England with his first wife and their children, he returned to the United States in the late 1960s to continue his artistic career. Martin Canin's work spans over more than forty years, with its origins in the color field movement. Though at first it would be easy to assimilate his paintings to the work of color field artists like Barnett Newman or Jack Bush, Canin’s largescale artworks maintain a distinctive lyrical aspect that separate them from pure geometry and plunge them into a subtle emotional realm. His captivating use of color juxtaposition and ever-changing geometries creates compositions of a rare intensity where color is freed from objective context and becomes the subject in itself. Martin Canin has exhibited his work extensively in museums and galleries, including the MoMa, Graham Gallery, and Tate Britian.
