About the artist:

Michel Lablais, born in 1925, having studied Applied Arts in Paris, has traveled extensively in Asia and the South Pacific. Since 1956 he exhibited regularly in galleries in France, the USA, Belgium and Germany. He has participated in group exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (The Art of Assemblage) 1964 the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris (Boxes) 1976; the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris (Donation Daniel Cordier). He also illustrated Rimbaud texts, Bernard Noël and Andrée Chedid. This time, Michel Lablais, plays with words as much as with his brushes and watercolor. He designed the pictorial and often mysterious expressions that bloom in the French language. It illustrates in a seemingly game to an almost literal simplicity. But behind all these images humor and seduction, lies a cultivated irony. These almost nothings then draw a true philosophy of things over the words and their history. The artist stated in 1990: "I'm fascinated by birth and death," he says. But it is the in-between which it is necessary to appreciate and manage as well as possible. In my painting, I consider people, insects and plants as objects. They constitute a mechanism that I want to understand the inner workings. First I see things as a theater. But I am neither complex nor unhappy. As for my personality, I am more instinctive than a reasoner. In fact, I am quite the opposite of a fanatic. For me, a successful life is a life that fulfills one's childhood dreams."
