About the artist:
Miguel Condé, Mexican figurative painter, draftsman and etcher. Born in 1939 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Lives and works between Madrid and Sitges, Spain. Self-taught, with the exception of anatomy studies with Stephen Rogers Peck in New York and etching techniques in Stanley William Hayter’s Atelier 17 in Paris. Recipient of a Guggenheim Latin American Fellowship and a grant from the French Government, Condé has been awarded various international prizes and is an appointed member of the Société des Peintres-Graveurs Français. His work is represented in numerous museums and collections (The Museum of Modern Art in New York, Cleveland Museum of Art, Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, University of Essex Collection of Latin American Art, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, Albertina in Vienna, Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris, etc.). 1939Mexican. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Son of Mexican father and American mother. 1939-48Resides alternately between the U.S. and Mexico. 1948Moves to New York with his mother. 1956Rents a studio in New York and studies anatomy with Steven Rogers Peck. 1959Returns to Mexico. 1960Marries Carola Schisel. 1963-64 Awarded a grant by the French government (Bourse d’Etudes Libres) and moves to Paris where he works with Stanley William Hayter in his print workshop, the Atelier 17. 1964Son, Amadeo, is born in Paris. 1966-69 Instructor of Drawing and Mixed Media in the graduate program at the University of Iowa School of Art, Iowa City, Iowa. 1969 Daughter, Caëtana María del Pilar, is born in Iowa City, Iowa. Returns to France. Travels to Spain and installs himself with his family in Sitges, Barcelona. 1971-72 Invited to participate in the itinerant etching workshop of the Smithsonian Institution in Barcelona, where he resumes his etching activities. 1972Meets Juana Mordó who offers him his first exhibition in Spain, which will take place in 1974. 1972-73Visiting Foreign Artist at the Cleveland Institute of Art, Cleveland, Ohio. 1973Special mention for painting, “May Show”, Cleveland Museum of Art. Begins to etch the “Guggenheim Suite”, portfolio of 15 etchings which will be printed at the Atelier Lacourière-Frélaut of Paris. Invited to participate in the exhibition “Peintres-Graveurs Français” (French Society of Painters and Etchers) in the Bibliotèque National (French National Library) in Paris. 1981First prize for printmaking, Landesbank, Stuttgart.
