A charming and simple woodcut by Canadian-Japanese artist Naoko Matsubara.

Two hands, one red and one blue, tangle with a bundle of green string in an attempt to create a cat’s cradle, a common children’s hand game. This print is signed, numbered, titled, and dated in pencil by the artist.

About The Artist: Naoko Matsubara

Matsubara Naoko RCA is a Japanese-Canadian artist. Matsubara graduated from the Kyoto University of Applied Arts in 1960. She then pursued an MFA in the School of Fine Arts at the Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh on a Fulbright Travel Grant, and since then has traveled extensively and taught at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn—a rare distinction for a Japanese woman. She also studied one year at the Royal College of Art, London....

About The Medium: Woodcut

A relief process in which the image is cut in a block of wood with tools such as knives, goughers or chisels. The image is inked with a roller, paper is applied to the surface and the back is then rubbed by hand or with a rubbing tool, transferring the image to the paper.
