Peter Hayward

American (1905–1993)

About the artist:

Regarded as one of Hawaii’s important painters, Peter Hayward specialized in oil painting. He was born in Keene, NH and graduated from Middlebury College. His painting topics ranged from urbanscapes to seascapes to landscapes. He has always been praised that his masterful techniques captured the essence of the flora and topography of Hawai’i. His exceptional palette knife skills have put him in the forefront with a select group of painters. Hayward worked for many of his later years out of a beachfront studio near Punalu'u, which was sort of an artist and writer’s retreat from urban Honolulu. Many of us remember him with his easel, either on the beach or on the side of the road. His works have steadily risen in value over time and are not easy to obtain. Hayward was always able to capture the essence of Hawai'i’s natural beauty and the rich, green and blue colors of the foliage and sky; furthermore, Hayward’s paintings have a very real sense of the wind through the coconut trees. His impressionistic, palette knife technique is best viewed from afar where the images come alive. With an economy of detail, typical of the palette knife technique, Hayward covered his canvases with a rich spectrum of color tones and contrasting hues of bright coloration. His artistic career was divided amongst Hawai'i, New York, Palm Beach, San Francisco, Miami, and Boston where had many one-man shows. His works are found in the collections of many celebrities such as Jack Paar, Chet Huntley, Greer Garson, and many corporations. The large portrait of Admiral Horatio Nelson used to be on display in the Trafalgar Room of the old Trader Vic’s in San Francisco. Submitted by James Hustace, Certified Fine Art Appraiser, whose primary source was a Library of Congress publication, Painters and Etchers of Hawaii: A Biographical Collection.
