Robert Indiana (American, 1928-2018) created the "American Dream Print Portfolio" in 1997 after working on pieces of the American dream for over 30 years.
Within these prints are bright bold colors and symbols which held various meanings for Indiana. Most prints have circles, stars, numbers or stenciled letters. This print is after his 1965 painting "The Confederacy Mississippi" from a group of four paintings each dedicated to a state which fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War. This works served as a condemnation to those states where violence against African Americans was especially prevalent during the Civil Rights era.
