This raucous scene by Latin American Surrealist Roberto Matta shows leaping nude figures flying through the air above what look like boulders.
Their bodies are warped and stretched at odd angles, so much so that they almost don’t appear human. But Matta relies on the human desire to read personhood into the most abstract of shapes and keeps them just on this side of recognizability so that the viewer can see people rather than shapes.
