about Bicentennial Print

The Mobil Bicentennial Poster Series, 'The Third Century', was commissioned by Mobil Oil Corporation to commemorate the nation's 200th Birthday.

The project included the work of 13 artists: William Bailey, James Brooks, Christo, Allan D'Archangelo, Roy Lichtenstein, Constantino Nivola, Robert Andrew Parker, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Ed Ruscha, Raymond Saunders, Ben Schonzeit and Velox Ward. A Mobil Oil news release stated "Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein has used the lithographic medium, combined with silk screen, to combine images related to American industry, technology, transport and architecture of the last century. The print resembles a modern, out-of-kilter stained-glass window and is straightforwardly dubbed "Bicentennial Print". This example is signed in pencil lower right.
