Roy Purcell's portrayal of large fallen trees layered over one another amid two trees still standing features a poem by the artist about the death and rebirth of trees in this habitat.
Knotty and twisted, the leafless tree in the foreground of the composition leans backward as if it is about to fall this very minute, while the tree behind it retains its leaves and stands tall regardless of the snowfall. Roy Purcell's poem reads: "Broken against the mountains, granite bulk, they dance then fail to rot \ Enrich the warm red earth, give birth, and rise again \ To kiss the sky while bound by time. a thousand human years slip by."
