About the artist:

Rubens Gerchman was born in 1942 in Rio de Janeiro and studied at that city’s School of Fine Arts. His paintings, drawings and performance pieces have been shown at galleries in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Amsterdam, Madrid, and Miami, and at museums including the Museum of Modern Art in São Paulo, the Museum of Modern Art and the Museu da Republica in Rio de Janeiro, the Austin Museum in Austin, Texas; and the Bronx Museum and El Museo del Barrio in New York. He also has been represented in the 1966, 1982, and 1998 São Paulo Biennials. Recent exhibitions in which Gerchman has participated include "Viva Brasil,” a 1999 show at Galerie 1900-2000 in Paris; “Re-aligning Vision: Alternative Currents in South American Drawing,” at the Miami Art Museum in 1999; and “L'Esthètique du Football” at Galerie Jérôme de Noirmont in Paris in 1998, featuring paintings and drawings of celebrated Brazilian soccer players. His famous experimentation with upside-down maps is represented in this catalogue by “New Geography: Homage to Torres Garcia.”
