about Adam et Eve from the Homage a Albrecht Durer Suite

This etching of Adam and Eve is from a suite of artworks that Salvador Dali created as an homage to German Renaissance painter Albrecht Durer.

This piece is in reference to an etching created by Durer of the same name (an example is shown in the photos). In the Durer piece, fine details show every part of the Genesis story whereas, in Dali’s rendition, it has been stripped back to basic details. The snake and apple, the branches covering the couple, and a mouse and rabbit at their feet are all that carry over in this surrealist impression.

About The Artist: Salvador Dali

Salvador Dalí was born in May 11, 1904 in the small agricultural town of Figueres, Spain. Figueres is located in the foothills of the Pyrenees, only sixteen miles from the French border in the principality of Catalonia. The son of a prosperous notary, Salvador Dalí spent his boyhood in Figueres and at the family's summer home in the coastal fishing village of Cadaques where his parents built his first studio. As an adult, he made...

About The Medium: Etching

The printing process of using strong acid or mordant to cut into the unprotected parts of a metal surface to create a design in intaglio (incised) in the metal. In traditional pure etching, a metal (usually copper, zinc or steel) plate is covered with a waxy ground which is resistant to acid. The artist then scratches off the ground with a pointed etching needle where they want a line to appear in the finished piece, exposing the bare metal. The plate is then put through a high-pressure printing press together with a sheet of paper (often moistened to soften it). The paper picks up the ink from the etched lines, making a print.
