About the artist:
Shukman, a Polish Jew who fled the Nazi's into the Soviet Union, came to the US in 1974. Much of his earlier work had to be left behind. This exhibit included work from 1970 to 1974 as well as his American work. His art education came in the state art schools, but his interest in not yet accepted modern art (Picasso, among others) in the 1950s led him on a path of dissidence.
