About the artist:

Portrait and subject painter, decorator and designer for textiles. Born 2 June 1880 at Blackburn, Lancashire. Studied at the Manchester School of Art, the R.C.A., the City and Guilds School, Kennington, and at the Académie Julian and Atelier Colarossi in Paris. Exhibited at the R.A. from 1901 and at the N.E.A.C. Served in the Yeomanry from 1910 and was in Egypt, Gallipoli and Palestine during the 1914–18 war. Held an exhibition at the Leicester Galleries 1919 of pictures of Palestine, Syria, etc. Married Amy K. Browning, painter, 1916. Member of the R.P. 1925, A.R.A. 1936, R.A. 1943. Died in London 13 November 1952.
