About the artist:

Xiu-ping Liao (also spelled Shiou-Ping Liao or 廖修平) was born in Taiwan and studied at the University of Taiwan before moving on for further training in the graphic arts, to Tokyo and Paris, where he came under the influence of major British printmaker Stanley Hayter in the late 1960's. In 1970 the artist was in New York, before heading back to Taiwan in the early 70's, becoming a visiting professor at National Taiwan Normal University. Liao spent considerable time in Hong Kong, Tokyo and Taipei during these years, refining his skills and eventually teaching them to a new generation. The artist is considered to be a technically brilliant printmaker. Chinese symbols are woven into his work, the earlier works focusing on gates and doorways and their symbolic meanings, while later works often deal with still life object themes. Exhibitions have been held in major cities around the world and the artist's works were already included in museum collections while he was relatively young.
